Hey SE, great article. I have been eyeing the Blizzard Rustlers (both the 10s and the 9s) as well as the Kores, but am wondering if I should go for a more flexible ski? Skiers looking for that wider one-ski quiver, this QST 98 does it all. Say what you will about Stockli, theyre all about precision, even if its at the expense of pure flotation. But perhaps Ive got enough weight to get the 184 Mantra to react just as well? Im 6-1 and 205lbs. Im looking for something a little better for off piste, powder and tight tree runs. Doh! I have been skiing all my life and I am still fairly aggressive, albeit slowing down a little each year. Free shipping. Overall, you'll find more similarities than differences between these three. 3D Radius Sidecut applies to this 102, and allows for a great variety of turn shapes and styles, even with a ski that has dual-metal laminate. IN the 92, I'd go 185--just nice to know that you're not leaving any performance on the table. That ski essentially blends the performance of the Sky 7 and the Bonafide that you demoed. Camox has some more pop and power to it while the M-Free and Bent Chetler are on the bendier side. I just demoed the Mantra M5 184cm at Park City. The QST 99s I have is 174cm.I am just wondering if there's something in between the Mantra and the QST. Versus the other skis on your list, the QST's don't have metal in them (except underfoot for binding retention), so they're a lot better for skiers who fit your description and application. Will spend enough time on groomers to not completely forsake having fun there as well. The other thing that stands out with the Stance 102 is the fact that it has fairly dramatic tip and tail rocker. The rule of thumb for skate poles is that they should come between your lip and your nose. I don't have a ton of powder experience. Also, would you consider the Soulrider 97? Atomic BENT CHETLER 120 Skis 2023. It doesn't have to be a super powder ski - I have atomic automatics for this - and I would really like it to carve well on piste. I'm pouring over the choices in this category and am looking for your pro support to narrow down my choice once and for all. I am (6', 205 53 year old), have been skiing off an on for 45 yrs. We're looking for your Mondo Point size, and the conversion is easy! It uses a wood core made from silver fir and beech, sandwiched between two full sheets of titanal metal, and finished with carbon and fiberglass. Thanks, Hi Brian! have fun! Weight: 170 lbs Underfoot, it's a lot like the Bonafide, but the metal tapers and ends as it reaches the tips and tails, which use more early taper and rocker than the Bonafide too. Tester - George Michaelsen 5. I'd also put the Enforcer (probably 93, but you're on the 100 thread) on the list as more of a freeride choice with a sandwich sidewall construction and two full sheets of metal. Thanks! It can make proper turns on firm snow, but its highlighting features are its performance in soft snow and its blend of playfulness and stability at speed. SE. At your size, I'd recommend the E100 in the 185--don't overthink it! Also, I'm trying to teach my 5 and 3 yo kids to ski so I'm in need of some maneuverability. I need to detune the tips and tail a bit on the BC. Youve made it to the next level in skiing. Mostly stick to the groomers, no moguls or trees really and love charging hard with a race background, but when it dumps, especially out west I want a ski that wont punish me in the soft stuff and crud. Very fun ski with no speed limit. You folks offer an impeccable and generous service. I then demoed the 180 Rustler 10s, but they didn't do it for me -- they felt about the same in the trees as the Kores, but I had a lot of trouble getting a nice carving rhythm with them and they just didn't feel as stable. Surely, something of this price level should perform properly, but it doesnt really do it on its ownit does require a skilled and attentive pilot to get the most out of it. I skied the mantra last week in 177cm and liked it. I guess it comes down to how often you're truly skiing in fresh snow, and for most people, it's not all that often. SE, Hi SE, I like the updates, as I think it makes the ski more manageable at different speeds and terrain. Each of these skis offers their own unique set of attributes, performance characteristics, and overall feel. I have also had a few folks recommend liberty origin 106s as they will supposedly be a blast on the tram but still hold up when I need an edge. Best Use: Downhill Skiing. The Kastle MX 99 is stiff, powerful, and holds an edge better than just about anything in the 100 mm category. Rather fit for a fat old man. Definitely keep that Rustler 10 at the top of your list. That seems like a great ski, but I'm wondering if I will then miss the playfulness of the Rossi s3 (which I believe has been replaced by the Rossi Sky 7 HD). I ski 50/50 east/west and generally stay within the resort. I am looking to buy a new pair of skis, more playful and freestyle-oriented than my current Rossignol EST. Willkommen bei unserer vollstndigen bersicht des Fritschi freeride. Thanks for your help. Thanks so much for the feedback! Thanks so much for the reviews! Heck, you could probably even ski blindfolded and with your hands tied behind your back. It's really quite versatile for a wide range of terrain, and also performs a little better at slower speeds than the M5, so might work better when going slow with the family. We've talked about the Rossignol Experience 94 Ti filling that gap of a less-demanding and more playful Mantra. If you thought the 177 was demanding, it will be magnified in the 184. SE. HI Arthur! Now I'm confused, I'm looking for a ski like the Kore that will absorb the big blows in chopped up snow, vs throwing me. Kind regards, If you're not looking to drop too much in terms of performance, I'd go Camox. Over their three seasons I've progressed from blues and some blacks thrown in to doing mostly the ungroomed blacks and double-blacks; it's all in bounds, and while mogul runs all day got a lot better, I'm still having trouble with tight trees and powder. A ski gear sub for everything ski related. I think because of my weight I shouldn't go to the 11 series. SE. Not impossible, but certainly on the long side for your stats. The tips and tails also have a softer flex pattern compared to the portion of the ski underfoot, which helps boost forgiveness in off-piste terrain. Arguably a bit much for the terrain park, but we've seen some of Fischer's athletes ripping this thing in the park, which is a nod to its playful nature and versatility. No worries, our owner's name is David, so we'll just pretend that what you meant John, Hi John! Youre just out there to have a good time. Thanks in advance. The store will not work correctly in the case when cookies are disabled. It's not the most powerful ski and doesn't have the strongest torsional stiffness, but edge grip on really firm snow at speed definitely isn't the focus of this ski, that's why Atomic also has the Vantage 97 Ti. I'm looking for something great in the powder that I can also ski on a groomer if need be. The 186 would work but 191 would make for a great cushy ride unless the new construction focuses this size (191) as a big plank for the 1 percenters. Snow conditions weren't the best, but found them nimble in the trees. As well as fast skiing stability and all mountain coverage, Im also looking for manoeuvrability for bumps and tight terrain. For skate skiing, poles should be a bit longer. I don't think you're too big for the 181 cm length by any means, but if you really felt like the 181 cm 106 felt short, you could size up. It's not an exceptionally forgiving all mountain ski for most skiers, but it has that high level of power, vibration damping, and stability that comes along with that much metal. The flex pattern is also one of the softest in this category, which really boosts the ski's forgiveness in variable snow conditions and tricky terrain. Have you skied the Enforcer in the 193? Hi Chase! Also check out the K2 Pinnacle 95 and the Blizzard Rustler 9 for comparison. I've been skiing on the Rossi s3 since 2013 so it's time for an upgrade. I think you're on the right track here and I do think the Tracer 98 could potentially work for you. Thanks so much in advance guys! I've skied it here in VT in about a foot and a half of light, dry snow, and it floated great, so unless you're in bottomless, I don't think the slight flotation advantage of the Rustler is worth the sacrifice, especially when it comes to on-trail performance. 1 for deep powder days in resort and 1 for all mtn. While its not the best floater on this list, its strengths lie more in the charging through crud and chop. Use: This is a question thats most relevant to advanced or expert skiers: Where are you skiing? I am 55yo, 57 and 165lbs. Check out the Blizzard Rustler 10 and 9 (104 vs 94 underfoot) as well as the K2 Pinnacle 95 and 105. I'm 40 year-old, 5'8",170 lb male skier who likes to spend most of my time in the trees, off-trail or diving into powder. Theres a bit of tail rocker, but nothing crazy, while the tip rocker is slightly more dramatic, leading to a greater splay and rise. and am a pretty aggressive overall when I ski. SE. I have been skiing Line Chronics for the past 5 years, they are pretty narrow underfoot and only like 176 in length. Because you're not skiing exceptionally deep snow very often, you really don't need to go wider than those skis. This boosts its soft snow performance and helps the ski float in soft snow, despite only having a 95 mm waist. Since its been a while. Any advice would be great! Please let me know your thoughts. Im currently on the Brahma- I believe its the 2015 and I do like it but thinking of getting a new setup- maybe slightly wider. We usually pair skis of this caliber with either the Marker Griffon 13 or the Tyrolia Attack 13--both have strong performance. Bonafide 97, Mantra 102, and Enforcer 100 are right up there in best of class in carving ability in this group. I was thinking the Nordica Enforcer 100, though maybe I should be looking at the 93. I'm 6'4" and about 200 lbs, and currently I have the 2016 Vantage 90 CTi in 184 cm with about 70 ski days on them. Rossignol is willing to give up some stability and vibration damping in this ski in exchange for maneuverability and forgiveness, which is a popular choice among skiers who like to spend most of their time off trail in the trees, moguls, etc. I'm looking for a recommendation on some powder skis. None of your choices are "wrong," but that QST just does everything well. I skied the Pinnacle 95 in a 186 and a 191 a few seasons back and enjoyed it, but felt they were easy to overski. SE, Hi Kyle! The Attack 13 is great too, low stand height, wide platform, and the twin cam heel piece makes them a little easier to click in, but you won't have any problems with that. Weight: Theres no easy way to say it, but skiers who are carrying around a bit of extra weight should consider staying to the higher side of the scale. On the other hand, the Unleashed is a little softer than the Enforcer with a more pronounced tail to offer a freeride application. The maneuverability of the Tracer 98 in the 180 cm length would be off the charts for you, and shouldn't feel too unstable. Please let me know if you have any advice between the two or recommend another ski. SE, Hi Todd! I loved both. Im skiing with an AT Set up (La Sportiva Spectre boots and radical 2.0 AT bindings) On circa 2005 k2 telemark skis. Murray. I think for your application and where you ski, the low 100's underfoot is the place to be rather than 90-95. It doesn't have a distinctly playful feel in soft snow and responds to skier input almost immediately. Hi Dave! For you and your application, I'd lean to the Atomic. SE, Hi SkiEssentials Have fun! 6'3" 200 pound mid-40s ex-racer & instructor here. Regarding the QST 92, do you recommend the 177 cm or the 185 cm length? At 100 mm underfoot, this is the widest Maverick, containing a poplar wood core and two sheets of titanal. Who it's For: You like the feel of a ski with metal laminates, but you want more maneuverability and forgiveness in soft snow conditions. But I want something fun for powder/all mountain. For modern skis with kids, those lengths are certainly prohibitive. For the best experience on our site, be sure to turn on Javascript in your browser. Thanks! The longer tip rocker makes this ski a great floater, but since the taper is mostly early, and not too dramatic, it has a straighter feel to the initiation phase of the turn. Deep Dive: Atomic Bent Chetler 100. Generally in resort, off-piste terrain. Well, maybe not, but you get my point. My search has led me to the 2022 Salomon QST 98 (176 cm) and the 2022 Dynastar M-Pro 99 (178 cm). Cross-country pole sizing is easy as well. Your boot sole length is the actual length of your ski boot, in millimeters. Armada Tracer 98 Any help would be great . Hi Kovi! Fantastic in the woods and bumps, these skis have some substance to them for sure. The Rustler is a bit more of a twin-tip shape, so the tail releases easier than the Pinnacle. Slightly narrower, I also put in a strong vote for the Fischer Ranger 99 Ti. Also, not necessarily. You could argue that it's more modern construction, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's better. It's versatile and playful and loves to hop and jump around, but you can also ski pretty darn aggressively and fast on it and it really doesn't become unstable. Think of any swervy type of skiing that can possibly fit in your mind and these Blends are the ideal toy for the task at foot. What would be the pros and cons of each, relative to each other and maybe more importantly relative to the Enforcer 100 (which I still will ski)? That long tip rocker also helps smooth out turn initiation on firm snow, helping you to link carving turns. I demoed the Salomon QST 99 in the 188 length last weekend and really enjoyed them. I'm 6'2"- 205lbs. Turns will be slow and steady, and at the end of your time as a beginner, youll be starting to tip your skis to turn rather than pushing yourself to turn with your heels. Maybe you spend a little time in the terrain park, but don't want to be limited by a narrower ski. I would be forever grateful for any insights or recommendations you can provide regarding my selections for a pair of skis, and their respective lengths, that will best suit my goal of improving my skills all over the mountain. By rejecting non-essential cookies, Reddit may still use certain cookies to ensure the proper functionality of our platform. Youre likely still pretty cautious in regards to your speed, but are able to stop on demand and have a bit more confidence that youll make it to the bottom in one piece. If you value a lighter overall ski, but don't want to give up metal, the Ranger 98 Ti is a great choice. I like the extra stability on groomers, and with 102mm waist widths, the extra length allows me to use these skis in light powder on those rare East Coast days. Take a look at the chart below, and if you have any trouble figuring out your size range, scroll past the cart to where we provide more information regarding these categories. On your ski boot, there will be a 3 digit number on the outside or inside heel of one or both of your boots. Quick answer: Stay in the mid-90 mm range, stay in the mid-180 cm length, and dedicated mogul skis are basically only designed for competitive mogul skiers who ski really direct lines. I'd look at the Bent Chetler 100. Maybe you want to do some AT skiing too, the Tracer 98 is a good candidate for a touring binding. Nope! I've been looking mainly at the Bent Chetler 100s but would love further input. Tail rocker combined with the twin tip shape allows you to release the tail edge quite easily, yet it will hold an edge on firm snow even when you're skiing aggressively. Before switching to a snowboard I was skiing for 12 years. I just skied the 2020 Rustler 10 two weeks ago and it felt a bit more damp, but not a ton--certainly not a whole new ski or anything like that. It wasnt too long ago, after all, that a 102 mm underfoot ski would be considered an absolute boat, but now, the construction and shaping techniques are so good that 102s act like much narrower skisin a good way. Mark, Hi Mark! Can you help? If youre looking to buy a powder ski, the natural notion is to go a bit longer. The Head Kore 93 also comes to mind, falls into a similar category, although its flex pattern is a little stiffer than the QST. I'd say the Sky is the best floater of the three, but doesn't quite have the stability of the Salomon. I use a pair of Nordica Soul Rider 87's for skiing with my kids, but that's on the extreme of maneuverability. But perhaps Ive got enough weight and height to get enough reaction out of the 184 Mantras if I need shorter turns? Hi SE, Need some advice on ski purchase. Have fun! While the construction is slightly different between the three, the overall concept and goals are similar. I think the 180ish length is just about right. Hope that helps! Think I could use a little more direction as I havent bought a pair of new skis in 15 years and Im still trying to wrap my head around all of the new technology. Is there a reason it didn't end up on your list for me? With some tweaks to the 2022 model, skiers get more length options (yay!) Then skis got wider. This winter, I've spent ~20 days at Taos, and am now skiing 75% ungroomed terrain, mostly blacks and doubles, with about 50% of my time on moguls or ungroomed bump runs and 30% in the trees. That would really help in tight moguls and trees, and it still has solid torsional stiffness and good vibration damping so will hold an edge really well on firm snow too. SE, Thanks Jeff. Beginner: Chances are youll know if this is you. Thoughts on the enforcer 100 or other skis I should consider? I tried out the blizzard bonafides last year and loved them in comparison to my chronics. The last time I demoed E100 it was a 185 (previous generation). The sick days are harder charging than the sick days. I think the 184 is a bit of a reach. Be prepared for burly and strong performance overall. Like to rip through the trees, love the steep and deep and am enjoying the bumps more and more all the time. What sets the Camox apart is a great blend of positive camber underfoot with moderate taper in the tips and tails. It's entirely possible and very common for boots with the same Mondo Point to have different Boot Sole Lengths. So I'm kind of a one off, not know what to do person. Still have questions? I would have a good deal on the Enforcer 100 (19/20), so not sure if the difference would be worth it. Im looking for an A/T ski to pair with Shift bindings, approximately 100mm under foot. Have fun! Most intermediate skiers will be tempted to wander off trail, but may not be brave enough quite yet.
